DUTCH FLAT, Placer County — Travelers using Interstate 80 near Dutch Flat should keep the Monte Vista Pavement Rehabilitation Project in mind when planning trips toward Alta and the Sierra Nevada. Caltrans resumed the major construction effort in April 2026, and the work extends beyond a single paving season.

What’s being built?

Caltrans describes an approximately $157.5 million project between the Dutch Flat/Monte Vista area and Drum Forebay. The scope includes resurfacing aging pavement, rehabilitating drainage infrastructure, improving median barriers and roadside lighting, updating traffic-management systems and adding an eastbound truck-climbing lane to improve movement through grades where heavy vehicles can slow traffic.

The agency’s April 2, 2026 announcement identified DeSilva Gates Construction as the prime contractor. It described temporary lane shifts and extended restrictions at the Crystal Springs and Drum Forebay on- and off-ramps, with tentative December 18 reopening targets for those ramps. The schedule can change.

Conflicting project timelines

The April press release said summer 2027, while Caltrans’ standing project page displays a June 2028 construction completion estimate. Those dates should not be presented as a guaranteed deadline. Updated contract and traffic information should determine the practical schedule.

Use Caltrans QuickMap for current closures, chain controls and travel delays. A previously announced detour is not proof a ramp remains unavailable today. Caltrans also reminds drivers to slow in work zones; its project manager is Sean Shaw, 530-923-3924.
