DUTCH FLAT, Placer County — Residents of Dutch Flat have an opportunity to record personal memories of their mountain community as part of Placer County’s 175th anniversary oral-history project.
How the project works
In an August 18, 2026 announcement, Placer County invited community members to interview someone important in their lives using tools from StoryCorps. Participants can record conversations through the StoryCorps Connect website or app; facilitated in-person sessions may be offered at announced locations by reservation.
The county says recordings are intended for preservation both at the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center and in the Placer County Museum Archive. The opportunity is not limited to well-known public figures: family stories, local traditions and changes observed over decades can all contribute.
Why Dutch Flat’s stories are distinctive
Dutch Flat developed during California’s Gold Rush, later experiencing major changes associated with hydraulic mining, railroad travel, logging, education and preservation of historic buildings. Personal recollections of school life, weather emergencies, older businesses and changing public services can add dimensions that do not appear in formal records.
Residents can also consult the Golden Drift Historical Society, whose collections and research library focus on Dutch Flat and neighboring Gold Run, Alta and Towle. The society and the county oral-history project are separate initiatives, so contributors should confirm their rights, recording consent and how their interviews will be stored or made available.
How to participate
Visit Placer County’s official 175th anniversary page for project instructions, participation options and current information about appointments. The county’s October 10 time-capsule sealing was a separate, past event; the oral-history program should not be confused with an invitation to place new items into an already sealed capsule.
